Our rental car for the first month of our German vacation was an Opel Astra which was a comfortably small sedan with plenty of zip. Ever vigilant of such things, I calculated the MPG to be 45. (It’s a good thing I used to be a chemistry teacher because converting kilometers/liter/Euro to miles/gallon/dollar is higher math!) Even with that relatively high MPG driving in Europe is not cheap. That’s because gas is about $9.00/gal.

Understandably, Germans gravitate toward smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. The variety of vehicles here is astounding. I’ve included a few photographs of some of the more exotic specimens:
