Dog trouble lately. We had almost no run-ins with dogs on the Pacific Coast and very few from San Diego through Texas but Louisiana to Florida has been hard on Mary. She has what I think is excessive fear of dogs. We’ve had a lot of chasers but I don’t think any of them really would have gone for blood. Our first choice when a dog gives chase is to take evasive action but unfortunately, many dogs are faster than we are in the quarter mile. Our top speed on the flat is about 16 mph while many dogs can do about 25. On the downhill we can leave them in the dust and over distance they can’t keep up with us. Most of the time, obviously, the odds are in their favor. Our solution on the Northern Tier ride was a BB pistol (first photo below.) We started this ride with it but sent it home after no dog attacks through Washington. There were also those embarrassing moments when we’d be talking to people and they’d see the pistol stuck in my handlebars and get this alarmed look in their eyes. It was more trouble than it was worth.

Then came Louisiana where every other house seemed to have a pack of dogs that would come after us. We bought an air horn. It worked on some dogs. We decided we needed to get serious so we bought some pepper spray yesterday. If that doesn’t work we’re going to Option C (see drawing below.)
